Basics - Power Issues
Problems relating to power are usually pretty quick to diagnose and are either quickly fixed, or require hardware repair by an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Check the following things to help diagnose power issues:
1. Is the Mac plugged in?
It seems simple but power cords can be dislodged by pets or by movements of furniture, etc. This includes making sure the outlet is working, try testing it with a cell phone charger or a lamp.
2. Is the computer not turning on?
Or is it just the monitor that is not coming on? This can usually be verified by either the power light on the computer or by listening for sounds coming form the computer such as hard drives spinning or fans blowing. Be sure to check power to the monitor if it is external and that it is properly connected.
3. Is the battery affecting the issue?
In Powerbooks and iBooks, be sure to remove the battery and only use the wall adapter. This can help isolate battery issues.
At this point you have checked that the power is good and that the power cord is not loose. If your machine still has not turned on normally, you will likely want to try the techniques listed in our Quick Fixes article. If these quick fixes do not solve the problem it is likely that you have an actual hardware problem and you should seek service at your local Apple Store Genius Bar or Apple Authorized Service Provider.
